We know that physical activity is important for; recovery from surgery, treatment and cancer related fatigue, reducing risk of recurrence and for our mental health.
We also understand that people’s ability to exercise is varied. Therefore when we say exercise, we mean the movement of our bodies in a way that is manageable but challenging for the individual.
We occasionally offer taster sessions of new activities and encourage physical activity such as walking wherever possible.
We are linked to York’s 5K Your Way as 2 of our trustees are ambassadors for the York event.
5K Your Way happens at Heslington Parkrun (don’t panic – it isn’t just about running) on the last Saturday of every month at 9am (meet at 8.45 by the flag). The event encourages people affected by cancer, their family, friends and supporters to move more. The 5k course consists of 5 laps of a beautifully tarmacked 1K cycle track. This makes it the perfect place to start on a movement journey. People are able to do whatever they can to start off with. Some volunteer, some support and observe, some walk a little some walk all of it, some run.
It doesn’t matter how people do it or how much of it people do, the point is to be getting into the habit of moving regularly. Then when its over enjoy a coffee/breakfast to celebrate. A support group in its own right (with a difference).
