York Breast Friends was set up in April 2014, in response to a lack of non-medical based support for patients with a breast cancer diagnosis in the York area. Our co-founders Zoe Bounds and Rachel Bruce, both gained amazing support from an online forum and both realised the importance of the peer support they received. Together they felt compelled to set up an organisation to provide the same support for others in the same situation.
In 2017 Breast Friends York became a registered CIO and created a Board of Trustees. It is the responsibility of the Trustees to ensure that the running of the group and the handling of the charity’s finances meet the requirements of the Charities Commission. The Board meet regularly and play a part in the running of the activities of Breast Friends York peer support group, however, we see the group as being run by the members for the members and we encourage any member of the group to set up activities, meet ups, events and to make suggestions for future activities and developments.
In March 2020 as the country went into lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic the Board of Trustees worked to transition into a virtual support group in order to continue to provide support to our members that required it. As the restrictions began to lift, we adapted again to develop a hybrid support group of face-2-face support with virtual options and in March 2022 we came full circle to return to our face-2-face delivery.
Our aim is to continue to provide a wide range of support that meets the needs of the whole group and all the individuals within it.
