Q. When and at what point in your breast cancer roller-coaster ride did you join BFY?
A. I honestly can't remember exactly when I joined I was diagnosed in 2009 and BFY didn't exist then and I didn't know anyone else in York who was going through breast cancer. I was all the way through my treatment but struggling alone when I came across BFY. At first I wasn't sure about joining but Zoe convinced me that actually someone like me, who had been living with this for quite a while, had a lot to offer as well as a lot to gain.
Q. Where did you hear about us?
A. The Magnolia Centre
Q. What have you gained from being a member of BFY?
A. Although I describe BFY as the club no one actually wanted to qualify for it has actually been a fantastic experience and helped me a lot. I have made friends for life in BFY, friends who will drop everything to help, comfort and offer support.
But most importantly we stick together, we might sometimes cry together but we laugh together much more often!
Q. What are your passions?
A. My family, my friends and our dog. Researching my family history, reading sewing and crafting as well as making cupcakes that I can't eat cos I'm allergic to eggs!!
Q. Words/phrase you live by?
A. Stand up for what you believe in, be true to yourself and never stop enjoying life.
Q. Your favorite place in York?
A. The Kings Manor it's such a beautiful building.
Q. What are you best known for?
A. Talking too much!!.
Q. What advice would you give to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients?
A. Join BFY obviously! Keep talking to people about what's going on and how you feel don't ever feel you need to hide away. Ask for for help when you need it. Listen to your body and rest and sleep whenever you need to especially during chemo.
Q. What message do you want to send to the world about breast cancer or cancer in general?
A. Breast cancer like any other cancer is going to happen to us or someone we love. We've cured so many of the things that used to kill the generations before us and we are living so much longer that cancer is now the biggie but more and more people are now living with cancer than dying from it.
