Q.When and at what point in your bc roller-coaster ride did you join BFY?
A. I was diagnosed with grade 2 ER positive breast cancer in July 2018 after my first routine mammogram when I turned 50. I had a lumpectomy in September, 3 weeks of radiotherapy in December and joined BFY after attending the Moving Forward course in April 2019
Q. Where did you hear about us?
A. First met Zoe at the Moving Forward course at the hospital after my treatment
Q. What have you gained from being a member of BFY?
A. New friends, support from amazing people who are always there when needed, new activities including Yoga, ceramics painting, modelling (fingers crossed the fashion show will be rescheduled for next year) and an even greater appreciation for the therapeutic qualities of coffee and cake
Q. What are your passions?
A. Walking/running, reading, volunteering at the library, drinking coffee/eating cake with friends (obviously obeying social distancing rules for all of the above)
Q. Words/phrase you live by?
A.
1. Just because someone carries it well doesn’t mean it isn’t heavy
2. Whether the glass is half full or half empty, it clearly needs topping up
And my personal favourite…
3. I dusted once. It came back. I’m not falling for that again.
Q. Your fav place in York?
A. Under normal circumstances I would have said home, but I feel like this year I’ve spent enough time there so I’m going to say Museum Gardens instead.
Q. What are you best known for?
A. When I was working it was always my attention to detail and the fact that I had a spreadsheet for everything (still do). Now that I’m retired I think it’s that I rarely say no to anything (anything enjoyable that is!)
Q. What advice would you give to newly diagnosed bc patients?
A. Breathe, don’t sweat the small stuff, look after yourself, try to avoid information overload but don’t be afraid to ask questions
Q. What message do you want to send to the world about bc or cancer in general
A. Being negative only makes a difficult journey more difficult. You may be given a cactus, but you don’t have to sit on it.
